Jefferson County residents can once again burn yard debris and other eligible materials following the resumption of residential burning on October 1. The summer fire season burn ban, which ran from spring through September, has lifted — giving homeowners the chance to clear accumulated yard waste as fall cleanup season gets underway.
Permits Required
Residents who wish to burn and have not yet obtained a burn permit will need to visit Jefferson County Fire & EMS at 765 S. 5th Street, Madras during regular business hours. Burning without a valid permit is prohibited, and conditions must still be suitable — wind speed, moisture, and air quality all factor into whether a given burn day is cleared.
Residents are encouraged to check with Jefferson County Fire & EMS for day-of burn status before lighting up. What may be a clear morning can shift rapidly in Central Oregon's fall weather, and compliance protects both property and neighbors.
FireFree Drop-Off Events in October
For those who prefer not to burn — or who have materials that burn restrictions still limit — Jefferson County Fire & EMS will host two FireFree events this month. The events allow residents to drop off yard debris and other eligible material at the Box Canyon Transfer Station, where the department will collect and dispose of it safely.
FireFree events are a free service that helps keep neighborhoods clean while reducing fire risk from accumulated vegetation. Exact dates for the October events will be announced by Jefferson County Fire & EMS — residents should watch for announcements on the department's website at jcfr1.org or its social media channels.
What's Eligible for FireFree Drop-Off
- Yard debris: branches, brush, leaves, and grass clippings
- Pruning waste and tree trimmings
- Other eligible vegetation materials
Household trash, treated wood, construction debris, and hazardous materials are not accepted at FireFree events.
Looking Ahead
Fall in Central Oregon can bring rapid weather changes. While fire weather conditions typically moderate through October, residents should remain attentive to any updated burn restriction notices, particularly during periods of high wind or low humidity. The Oregon Department of Forestry and Jefferson County Fire & EMS coordinate restrictions based on live conditions.
