Adults in Jefferson County looking to earn their high school equivalency have a new local option: Central Oregon Community College (COCC) is offering a GED preparation class at the Madras campus beginning this week, according to a notice from Warm Springs tribal radio station KWSO.
The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7:20pm. Interested students can register through the COCC website at cocc.edu/departments/adult-basic-skills/schedule.
Why It Matters
Access to adult education and GED programs has long been a challenge in rural communities like those across Jefferson County. Having the class available locally in Madras — rather than requiring a drive to Bend or Redmond — removes a significant barrier for residents in Madras, Warm Springs, Metolius, Culver, and surrounding communities who work during the day or lack reliable transportation.
The GED credential opens doors to higher education, vocational training, and many employers who require a high school diploma or equivalent. COCC's Adult Basic Skills program serves learners at all levels, from foundational literacy to GED preparation.
About the Madras Campus
The COCC Madras campus has been a vital educational resource for Jefferson County for years, offering college transfer courses, professional-technical programs, and workforce training in addition to adult basic skills. The campus serves students who might otherwise face a significant commute to Bend for higher education access.
