Jefferson County's Culver Mustangs are the talk of Central Oregon prep football this fall, carrying a perfect 6-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in Skyline Conference play into what promises to be a critical final stretch of the 2026 regular season.
The team's September performance bordered on the extraordinary: in four games, the Mustangs went undefeated and never surrendered a single point to any opponent. Four straight shutouts — zero points allowed — is the kind of stat line that draws attention well beyond Jefferson County.
Conference Race Heating Up
At 2-0 in the Skyline Conference, Culver holds a commanding position in the 2A nine-man standings. The Mustangs will need to continue their run through the remaining conference schedule to lock up favorable playoff seeding for the OSAA 2A state tournament.
When the Central Oregonian checked in on the program in early October, Culver was being described as one of the more complete small-school teams in the state — balanced on both sides of the ball and playing with a confidence that only an unbeaten record can build. If they maintain their current trajectory, a deep postseason run looks well within reach.
Other County Action This Week
Across the county, the Madras White Buffalos JV squad hosts Caldera tonight, Monday, at 5:30 p.m. at Madras High School. The varsity Buffalos (1-5 overall, 0-2 in conference) have had a tough go of it this fall but continue to suit up each week. On the volleyball court, the Warm Springs K-8 Academy hosts Obsidian this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
What's Next for the Mustangs
With the regular season winding down, every game now carries extra weight for Culver. A loss would be the first blemish on an otherwise perfect record — and would complicate their playoff positioning. Expect a packed sideline and plenty of community support as the Mustangs push toward what could be a historic season finish.
