Residents across Jefferson County should remain on alert this week as forecasters warn of dry thunderstorm potential and persistent high fire danger east of the Cascades, according to the National Weather Service and Oregon Department of Forestry.

Dry storms — thunderstorms that produce lightning but little or no rainfall — are expected to move across Central and Eastern Oregon through Wednesday, bringing the risk of new fire ignitions even as firefighters work to contain blazes already burning in the region. Gusty winds accompanying the storm system could complicate conditions further.

No Meaningful Rain in the 7-Day Outlook

Weather models show no significant precipitation expected for the Madras area or broader Jefferson County through at least next Monday. Humidity is expected to recover overnight on some nights, but afternoon conditions are forecast to remain hot and dry — classic late-summer fire weather for the high desert.

The Oregon DEQ smoke monitoring program is currently tracking intermittent smoke from several active fires, with conditions expected to vary day to day depending on wind direction. Residents sensitive to smoke — including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions — should monitor air quality at airnow.gov and limit outdoor activity when air quality dips into the Unhealthy range.

Regional Fires Nearing Containment

Several large fires that dominated the region over the past month are showing strong containment progress:

  • Henry Fire: 29,850 acres — 97% contained
  • Coyote Fire: 17,459 acres — 88% contained
  • Shingle Fire: 73,016 acres — 86% contained

Crews continue mopping-up and patrol operations on these fires, with aircraft remaining available for air support at Lake Billy Chinook as needed. Watercraft on the lake are asked to avoid aircraft flight paths during active operations.

Burn Restrictions Remain in Effect

Burn barrels remain prohibited countywide through the remainder of the 2026 fire season under an order issued by Jefferson County Fire and EMS on August 4. Campfire restrictions are also in effect on federal lands throughout Central Oregon.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for Jefferson County emergency alerts at jeffco.net and to have a go-kit ready in case of rapid evacuation.
