Firefighters from Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue quickly contained a brush fire on the Fourth of July that briefly threatened a home and several outbuildings in the unincorporated community south of Madras.
Crews were dispatched around 2:02 p.m. Saturday to the 14800 block of SW Peninsula Drive, where the first arriving engine found approximately a quarter-acre of dry brush burning and being pushed by afternoon winds directly toward a residence and sheds. Firefighters deployed hose lines to protect the structures and knocked down the flames near the home before working across the property to extinguish the remaining fire.
The blaze was ultimately held to approximately 0.35 acres — a testament to the speed of the response and an unusual assist from the property itself.
Goats Help Hold the Line
Officials credited recent grazing on the property as a key factor in limiting fire spread. The homeowner had used goats to clear grass and shrubs across a large portion of the land in the weeks before the fire, creating a natural fuel break that slowed the advance and helped crews keep the fire confined to the property of origin.
The home sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported among the 17 personnel — seven career and 10 volunteer firefighters — who responded with six engines, one tender, and one support unit. Mutual aid was provided by Redmond Fire & Rescue.
Cause: Improperly Discarded Smoking Materials
Fire investigators believe the fire was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials. Officials are reminding residents across Jefferson County that during dry summer conditions, discarded cigarettes and other smoking materials can ignite rapidly.
Always discard smoking materials in a metal container filled with sand or water — never in dry grass, brush, or a regular trash can.
Fire Restrictions Remain in Effect
The incident is a timely reminder that Jefferson County is deep into fire season. The 2026 fire season has been in effect since May 8, and burning hours within the Jefferson County Fire & EMS District are restricted to sunrise to 10:00 a.m. daily. All fires must be fully extinguished by 10 a.m.
