The Fourth of July is days away, and with fire danger running high across Jefferson County and all of Central Oregon, fire officials and state agencies are issuing a clear message: know the rules before you light anything up this holiday weekend.
Open burning in Jefferson County is currently closed. Jefferson County Fire & EMS enacted summer burn restrictions effective May 4, 2026, and has since escalated to a full closure of open burning as summer conditions have arrived. No open burning of any type is currently permitted in unincorporated Jefferson County.
Fireworks: Know Your Zone
Rules vary significantly depending on where you are in Jefferson County:
- Within Madras city limits: Consumer fireworks are permitted on July 4th only. They are banned the rest of the year. Follow all local fire safety guidelines and never use fireworks near dry grass, buildings, or vehicles.
- Unincorporated Jefferson County: With open burning closed countywide, any fire-producing items outside city limits carry significant risk and potential legal liability. Check jcfr1.org for current guidance before the holiday.
- Oregon State Parks: Fireworks and all explosives are strictly prohibited in all Oregon State Parks year-round, including Smith Rock State Park and Cove Palisades State Park. State Parks officials are actively enforcing the ban this holiday weekend.
- Federal lands (BLM and National Forest): Fireworks and exploding targets are always illegal on federal lands in Central Oregon. Stage 1 Public Use Fire Restrictions, in effect since mid-June, also prohibit open fires on all Central Oregon public lands.
- Oregon Dept. of Forestry (ODF) lands: Fireworks are banned on all state forests and ODF-protected land, which includes private lands under ODF fire protection jurisdiction.
Why It Matters Especially This Year
Oregon officials say the 2026 fire season is shaping up to be one of the more dangerous on record. A dry, mild winter across Central Oregon left soils well below average moisture thresholds heading into summer. In current conditions, a single spark from a firework landing in dry grass can trigger a fast-moving fire within seconds.
The Oregon Department of Forestry has also placed a ban on fireworks on all state forests and ODF-protected private land — a step that reflects the severity of this season’s risk. Violations can result in significant fines and civil liability for suppression costs.
Safe Ways to Celebrate
Jefferson County communities typically offer public fireworks displays and community events where residents can enjoy the holiday safely. Check local community calendars for organized Fourth of July activities in Madras, Culver, and other communities.
