Jefferson County School District 509J entered the new year having trimmed roughly $2 million from its budget and reduced approximately 18 positions. The cuts came through a combination of retirements, non-renewals of temporary contracts, and natural attrition rather than outright layoffs — an outcome that district officials worked hard to achieve and that sets Jefferson County apart from some larger Oregon districts that have faced more disruptive reductions.
Why the Money Shrank
Oregon funds its public schools primarily through a per-pupil formula tied to enrollment. What's New This Fall
Despite the tighter resources, the district opened the year with its full complement of core academic programs. Madras High School's fall sports teams — cross country, volleyball, and football — are all back in action, with the Buffs starting their 2026 schedules this month. Fall athletics continue to be a major draw for community involvement at MHS.
The district is also in its second year of Oregon's universal school meals program, which provides free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of household income. Participation has remained strong, and district staff say the program has simplified enrollment paperwork for families.
