Jefferson County is moving forward on a grant-funded project to support the Madras Community Food Pantry, following a notice of intent to award grant administration services for the initiative. The county issued the award notice after a competitive request-for-proposals process, selecting a firm to manage federal and state grant funds tied to the pantry project.
The Madras Community Food Pantry serves as a critical safety net for Jefferson County families. The organization reported providing food for more than 2,000 families in a single month earlier this year — a figure that underscores both the depth of need in the county and the pantry's outsized role in the community.
Why the Grant Matters
Grant administration services cover compliance requirements, reporting, and coordination with state and federal funding sources — the behind-the-scenes work that keeps grant dollars flowing to the pantry's shelves. Jefferson County's administration office has led the effort to secure outside funding to expand and stabilize pantry operations in Madras.
"Our mission is to help people out of poverty by alleviating hunger and food insecurity for those persons living in Jefferson County who are at risk," pantry director Guerassio said earlier this year.
Demand has remained elevated through 2026, a year shaped by severe drought conditions, reduced agricultural income for many rural families, and rising household costs across Central Oregon. Jefferson County was classified under severe drought across 94% of its land area at the height of the season, with the North Unit Irrigation District reducing water allotments significantly — ripple effects that touched farms, ranches, and the families who depend on them.
December Gala: Save the Date
The Madras Community Food Pantry is also looking ahead to its signature annual fundraiser — a community gala set for Friday, December 4, 2026 at 5:00 PM at the Jefferson County Event Center.
The gala is one of the pantry's most important fundraising events of the year, bringing together community members, local businesses, and supporters to raise money for ongoing operations. Details on tickets, sponsorship opportunities, and the program will be announced in the coming weeks.
How to Help Now
The food pantry accepts food donations, monetary contributions, and volunteer time year-round. A "Plant a Row" gardening initiative invites local gardeners to donate a portion of their harvest to pantry shelves — a program that has generated meaningful community support throughout the growing season.
