Jefferson County residents are beginning to receive their ballots in the mail this week, kicking off the final stretch of voting for the November 3 general election. With several competitive local races on the ticket — including an open Madras mayor's seat and a contested sheriff's race — county election officials are encouraging voters to review their choices and return ballots early.

A New Mayor for Madras

The most closely watched race this cycle is for Madras mayor. Incumbent Mayor Mike Lepin chose not to seek re-election, leaving the seat open for the first time in years. Two candidates are vying to lead the city:

  • Travis Montgomery, 47, grew up in Springfield and has lived in Jefferson County for 22 years, calling Madras home since 2017. He has focused his campaign on economic development and strengthening city services.
  • Jennifer Townsend, who is running on a platform centered on community engagement, local infrastructure, and fiscal responsibility.

Three Madras City Council seats are also on the ballot, giving voters the chance to shape a majority of the council heading into 2027.

Sheriff's Race Draws Attention

The Jefferson County Sheriff's race pits incumbent Sheriff Jason Pollock — who has held the position since 2022 — against former department employee Tyler Anderson. Pollock has highlighted new hires and staffing improvements made during his tenure, while Anderson has called for greater budget transparency and a stronger deputy presence in rural communities throughout Jefferson County.

The race has drawn scrutiny in part because Anderson faced questions earlier this year regarding his police certification status, an issue both campaigns addressed during the fall campaign season.

Jail Levy Renewal

Voters will also be asked to renew a five-year jail levy that funds operations at the Jefferson County jail. County commissioners have broadly backed the renewal, warning that failure to pass it would require significant cuts to jail staffing and capacity.
