Jefferson County is about to lose its only Wells Fargo branch. The Madras location will close its doors on June 24, 2026 at 11 a.m., the bank has confirmed, ending a more than 60-year presence in the community and leaving Jefferson County without a Wells Fargo branch entirely.

Customers with accounts at the Madras branch are being redirected to the bank’s Redmond location, roughly 30 miles south on U.S. Highway 97.

What Customers Need to Do

Wells Fargo customers in Madras and surrounding communities should take the following steps before the June 24 closure:

  • Update any automatic payments or direct deposits linked to the Madras branch
  • Ensure safe deposit box contents are retrieved before closure
  • Confirm account details and transition information by contacting Wells Fargo customer service at 1-800-869-3557 or visiting wellsfargo.com
  • Identify the nearest ATM and branch alternatives for ongoing banking needs

Wells Fargo’s ATM network and online banking services will remain accessible to customers after the branch closes.

A Pattern of Disinvestment?

The closure has become a talking point on the local campaign trail. Commissioner candidate Ara Erdekian raised it at the recent candidate forums, arguing it is part of a broader loss of financial services in Jefferson County. Challenger George Curtiss made similar arguments, pointing to the closure of the county animal shelter and the outsourcing of 911 dispatch as evidence that services are increasingly leaving the community.

Jefferson County has long faced the challenges common to rural Oregon communities: limited banking options, reduced retail competition, and difficulty attracting and retaining businesses. With the closest remaining Wells Fargo branch now in Redmond, residents without reliable transportation face a steeper barrier to in-person banking services.

Alternatives in Madras

Madras residents still have access to other financial institutions in town. Oregon Pacific Bank, Columbia Bank, and SELCO Community Credit Union maintain presence in the Madras area. The U.S. Post Office also offers basic postal banking services.

Residents concerned about access to banking services may also contact the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation or look into accounts at federally insured credit unions, which often serve rural communities with fewer restrictions.

The June 24 closure marks the end of a multi-decade institutional presence in Madras — and adds to a list of services that county residents and candidates say the community can no longer take for granted.
