Jefferson County is about to lose its last major bank branch. Wells Fargo has confirmed that its Madras location at 14 SW E Street will close permanently on June 24, 2026 at 11 a.m., ending more than six decades of banking service in the community.

The closure means Jefferson County will have no national bank branches within its borders — a significant shift for residents, small businesses, and agricultural operations that have relied on in-person banking services.

Where Customers Will Go

Wells Fargo is directing affected Madras customers to its Redmond branch, located roughly 30 miles south. For many county residents — particularly seniors, those without reliable transportation, and small business owners who make frequent cash deposits — that distance represents a meaningful burden.

The closure has already become a talking point in the county's commissioner races. Candidate Ara Erdekian specifically cited the Wells Fargo closure at multiple candidate forums as an example of essential services disappearing from Jefferson County, and called for commissioners to take a more proactive role in maintaining financial infrastructure.

What's Still Available Locally

While the Wells Fargo closure is significant, Jefferson County is not without financial services entirely. Oregon Pacific Bank and Beneficial State Bank have operated in the area, and the Madras branch of Wauna Credit Union offers a range of banking services. Residents are encouraged to explore local credit union options, which often offer competitive rates and personal service.

ATM access will remain available in Madras after the branch closes, and many banking functions can be handled online or through mobile apps — though that remains a barrier for some residents, particularly in an area where broadband access and digital literacy gaps persist.

A Broader Trend

The Madras closure is part of a nationwide pattern of major bank consolidations in rural communities. Between 2010 and 2024, the United States lost more than 12,000 bank branches, with rural counties experiencing closures at disproportionately high rates.

For Jefferson County — which has been working to climb out of its ranking as one of Oregon's most economically distressed counties — losing the visibility and accessibility of a major national bank is more than a convenience issue. It can affect credit access, small business financing, and the overall perception of the county as a place to invest and grow.

Madras residents with questions about account transitions can call Wells Fargo customer service at 1-800-869-3557 or visit the branch before June 24.
