Madras has a new city administrator. Brenda Fahey, who currently serves as assistant city manager and human resources director for the City of The Dalles, was formally hired by the Madras City Council at its June 23 meeting and is set to begin her new role on July 20.

Fahey's selection caps a search that stretched more than five months. The city began its recruitment process earlier this year and ultimately narrowed the field to three finalists, who were introduced to the public at a meet-and-greet at Initiative Brewing in mid-June. The City Council selected Fahey following final interviews on June 16.

Why Fahey?

"The city council is thrilled to announce our selection for our new city administrator," Mayor Mike Lepin said at the time of the selection. "Brenda Fahey brings a great track record to our team."

Fahey's background includes experience in municipal administration, human resources, and city management in a small Oregon city with some parallels to Madras. The Dalles, situated along the Columbia River in Wasco County, has navigated its own rural economic development challenges — experience that may prove relevant to Madras's ongoing efforts to grow its economy and address infrastructure needs.

An Important Hire for Madras

The city administrator role is the chief executive position for the City of Madras, responsible for implementing City Council decisions, overseeing city staff, managing the municipal budget, and serving as the primary point of contact between the elected council and the day-to-day operations of city government.

The position had been vacant or in interim hands for several months, making the hire an important step toward stability in city operations. Key issues on the city's plate include infrastructure investment, economic development, housing, and coordination with Jefferson County and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs on shared challenges.

Fahey is expected to begin building relationships with city staff, elected officials, and community stakeholders when she officially takes the helm on July 20. Residents looking to connect with city leadership can reach Madras City Hall at madras.gov.
