Jefferson County residents can fire up the burn pile again. After a season-long closure that began in early May, Jefferson County Fire & EMS lifted residential open-burning restrictions effective today, October 1.
The reopening applies to residents who hold a current burn permit. Permits are free and required by law for any open burning on residential property in Jefferson County. To obtain one, visit the Jefferson County Fire & EMS station at 765 S. Fifth St., Madras, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Check Before You Burn
Even with the season reopened, burning can still be temporarily suspended on any given day due to poor air quality, high winds, or Red Flag conditions. Residents are strongly encouraged to call the burn line at 541-475-1789 each day before lighting up to confirm it is an approved burn day.
Jefferson County Fire & EMS reminds residents of the following rules:
- Never leave a fire unattended
- Keep water sources close to the fire at all times
- Extinguish all fires by sunset
- Do not burn garbage, plastic, diapers, dead animals, auto bodies, rubber, or any commercial or industrial waste
October FireFree Events
For residents who prefer not to burn — or who have materials that do not qualify for open burning — Jefferson County is hosting two FireFree drop-off events this month. Participants can drop off yard debris and other eligible materials at the Box Canyon Transfer Station, where Jefferson County Fire & EMS personnel will handle collection and disposal.
Exact FireFree event dates and times have not yet been finalized. For more information or to confirm scheduling, call 541-475-7274.
A Long Fire Season
The 2026 fire season was notably demanding across Jefferson County and the broader Central Oregon region. Burn barrel use was suspended as early as August 4 as fire activity increased. The county remained under at least a Moderate fire danger rating through the end of September, reflecting a summer marked by drought conditions and dry vegetation across nearly the entire county.
As fall moisture returns and fire danger eases, residents have more flexibility — but officials stress that responsible burning habits remain essential year-round.
