Two active wildfires continue to challenge firefighters and residents across Jefferson County this week, as hot, dry, and breezy conditions persist across Central Oregon.

Round Butte Fire: 1,090 Acres, 12% Contained

The Round Butte Fire, burning approximately five miles west of Culver near the Round Butte Reservoir area, has grown to an estimated 1,090 acres with only 12% containment as of Monday, according to updates from Central Oregon Fire Information.

The fire ignited August 1 and initially scorched 50 to 100 acres before strong westerly winds drove rapid growth. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office issued Level 3 "Go Now" evacuation orders for portions of the affected area in early August.

Residents in and around Culver, Crooked River Ranch, and areas west of Madras are urged to stay informed and be prepared to evacuate quickly if conditions change. The National Weather Service has noted ongoing fire weather concerns, with west winds of 20 to 30 mph and relative humidity as low as 15% continuing to stress fire lines.

Bench Fire: 67,078 Acres, 84% Contained

The larger Bench Fire, burning southwest of Warm Springs, has reached 67,078 acres with 84% containment — a significant improvement that has allowed authorities to lower evacuation levels across the reservation.

As of Monday, all evacuation levels on the Warm Springs Reservation were reduced to Level 1 — Be Ready, signaling meaningful progress by firefighting crews. Residents who evacuated are advised to stay prepared, however, as dry and windy conditions could still affect fire behavior.

Recovery Distribution Center Open

The Warm Springs Wildfire Recovery Distribution Center remains open at the Old School Cafeteria from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., providing food, water, and household supplies to families affected by the Bench Fire. Tribal officials encourage those who need assistance to arrive early.

Donations are being accepted at designated drop-off locations across the Warm Springs community.

Burn Restrictions Remain in Effect

Jefferson County Fire & EMS reminds all residents that burn barrel use has been prohibited since August 4, 2026 for the remainder of the fire season. No outdoor burning of any kind is recommended at this time.
