After weeks dominated by wildfire news, the communities of Warm Springs and Madras have a weekend full of cultural celebration, youth programming, and community connection ahead. Here’s what’s coming up:
Wyam Youth Center Hosts First-Ever Indigenous Youth Fashion Show — Friday, Aug. 14
The Wyam Youth Center is making history with its first Indigenous Youth Fashion Show this Friday, August 14, at the Old Elementary School Gym in Warm Springs. Doors open for dinner at 5 p.m., with the show beginning at 6 p.m.
The show is designed for Native designers aged 24 and under, showcasing up to three looks each — from streetwear to handmade apparel and family regalia. Models of all ages are welcome to walk the runway.
The evening will feature a live performance by local drum group NDN Boyz, an event photographer, and raffles featuring items handcrafted by the Wyam Youth Center. For information, email WyamYouthCenter@wscat.org or visit their Facebook page.
Free Pet Wellness Clinic in Warm Springs — Saturday, Aug. 15
The Humane Society of Central Oregon is bringing a free walk-in pet wellness clinic to Warm Springs this Saturday, August 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire & Safety on campus. No appointment is needed.
Services available include wellness exams, vaccinations, microchipping, and dewormer medication — at no cost to pet owners. It’s a great opportunity for families to get their animals up to date, particularly as fire season has disrupted routines across the reservation.
Nature Kids Outing at Sahalee Park — Saturday, Aug. 15
Families in the Madras area are invited to a Nature Kids outing at Sahalee Park this Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The theme is Teddy Bear Picnic, with a hands-on activity for kids and families to explore the natural world together. The program is free and ideal for children ages 5–10. Registration is helpful but not required; visit DeschutesLandTrust.org for more.
Youth Art Camp — Aug. 17–19
Papalaxsimisha, Warm Springs Recreation, and Southern Oregon University’s “All My Relations” program are hosting a youth art camp from August 17–19, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day in the Community Center social hall. The community is invited to attend dinner and an art showcase on Wednesday, August 19 starting at 5:30 p.m.
To register kids for the camp, call 541-553-3243 or stop by the Community Center office.
MountainStar Resource Bus — Friday, Aug. 14
The MountainStar Resource Bus will be in the parking lot of the Warm Springs Community Center Friday, August 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., providing diapers, wipes, and other supplies for young children.
