Fall sports season is winding down for the Madras High School White Buffalos, and attention is beginning to turn toward the winter season as basketball, wrestling, and swimming prepare to open their campaigns later in November.
Football: A Rebuilding Year
The Madras varsity football program closed out a 2026 season that served as a foundation-building year, finishing 1-5 in league play in the Oregon 4A classification. The year gave younger players significant game experience — a key component in programs looking to build depth heading into future seasons.
Madras plays in a competitive league against programs from across Central Oregon. While the overall record was not what the program hoped for entering the year, the development of younger talent and experience gained across the roster are expected to benefit the White Buffalos heading into the 2027 season.
Volleyball: Postseason Opportunity
The White Buffalos volleyball team had a stronger fall run and enters November with an eye on the Oregon School Activities Association 4A postseason. District competition will determine state tournament qualifiers beginning in mid-November, and Madras is among the programs with a shot at advancing.
Volleyball has been a bright spot in the White Buffalos athletic program this fall, and the team has drawn solid community support throughout the season. Home matches at Madras High School are open to the public.
Soccer Closes Its Campaign
Both the boys and girls soccer programs finished their regular season schedules in October. The Madras athletic department is expected to release end-of-season awards and honors in the coming weeks as coaches finalize their program reviews.
Winter Sports Begin Soon
With fall sports wrapping up, the focus shifts to winter. Boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and swimming will all begin their 2026-27 campaigns later this month under OSAA guidelines. Basketball in particular draws large crowds at Madras High School, and community members are encouraged to check the school's athletic calendar for season-opening home game dates.
