Summer is winding down across Jefferson County, and families are beginning to think ahead to the new school year. Jefferson County School District 509J — which serves roughly 2,700 students across nine schools in Madras, Culver, Metolius, and Warm Springs — is preparing for the 2026–27 academic year, with the school board having held its annual calendar planning session earlier this month.

Warm Springs Back to School Barbecue: September 3

One of the most anticipated community events of the season is the annual Warm Springs Back to School Barbecue, scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, at the Warm Springs K–8 Academy. The event is a beloved tradition for families on the reservation, offering a chance to reconnect before the first school bell rings and build community ahead of the academic year.

Parents, students, and staff are all welcome. The event is free and open to the Warm Springs community.

COCC Madras Campus: Fall Term Registration Open

Central Oregon Community College's Madras campus, located at 1170 E. Ashwood Road near Juniper Hill Park, is accepting enrollment for Fall Term 2026. The campus offers credit courses, workforce development programs, and a wide range of community education and non-credit classes for personal enrichment, skills-building, and professional development.

For Jefferson County high school students, COCC's College Now program allows qualified students at Madras High School to earn college credit while still in high school. Updated course and registration information for the 2026–27 academic year is expected to be posted in September — families are encouraged to check cocc.edu regularly.

It has been a challenging summer for many county families, with wildfire activity, drought, and economic pressures in the agricultural community. Community educators and school staff say they are committed to making the return to school a stabilizing and positive experience for all students — including those from families most affected by the summer's events.
