Halloween arrives this Saturday, October 31, and Jefferson County is getting into the spirit with a week's worth of community events. From costumed kids hitting downtown Madras businesses to a family-friendly Bingo Night at the senior center, there's something for just about everyone — whether you're 5 or 85.
Downtown Madras Trick-or-Treat
Madras's downtown business district is once again throwing open its doors to trick-or-treaters for the annual Halloween walk. Local businesses line up to hand out candy and goodies to costumed kids and their families as they make their way through the downtown corridor. It's become a beloved Jefferson County tradition, drawing families from Culver, Metolius, Crooked River Ranch, and beyond.
Participating businesses will be marked with signage in their windows. Parents are encouraged to accompany young children and stick to lit storefronts. For the latest list of participating businesses and updated timing, contact the Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce at (541) 475-2350.
Bingo Night at the Community and Senior Center — Oct. 29
On Wednesday evening, October 29, the Jefferson County Community and Senior Center will host a community Bingo Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is open to all ages and features prizes, food, and beverages on-site. Bring small bills for play. It's a low-key, welcoming way to kick off the Halloween week early — and a great excuse to get out of the house mid-week.
Coffee Cuppers
The Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce continues its weekly Coffee Cuppers morning gathering this week. The event is open to community members and local business owners looking to connect over coffee. Contact the Chamber for current time and location details.
Safety Tips for Halloween Night
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office offers a few reminders for a safe Halloween:
- Outfit kids with glow sticks, reflective tape, or bright costumes so drivers can see them after dark.
- Plan your route ahead of time and stick to well-lit neighborhoods.
- Inspect all candy before children eat it.
- Drivers: slow down in residential areas and watch for children crossing between parked cars.
For rural residents in areas like Crooked River Ranch, Culver, Metolius, and Ashwood, coordinating with neighbors for a central gathering spot can make trick-or-treating more practical and more fun. Many rural communities set up driveway candy stations or small neighborhood meetups so kids don't face long, dark stretches between houses.
