Horse racing fans across Central Oregon have reason to celebrate this week: the 60th Annual Crooked River Roundup kicks off tonight at the Crook County Fairgrounds in Prineville, running Wednesday through Saturday, July 15–18. The milestone anniversary marks the rise of a local event from humble beginnings into Oregon's biggest horse racing meet.
"It's our 60th year," said event director Doug Smith. "That's a long time ago, and it is cool to celebrate it."
Four Nights of Racing
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. each evening with post time at 7:15 p.m. Racing fans can expect up to eight races on Wednesday and Thursday nights, with as many as ten races per night on Friday and Saturday as more horses are entered.
More than 230 stalls have been reserved for this year's event — a large number even by Crooked River Roundup standards — suggesting a competitive and entertaining four nights. The lineup includes some headline matchups:
- A quarterhorse race with a purse approaching $20,000
- A thoroughbred race with a prize near $11,000
- Multiple additional stakes races rounding out the card
Oregon's Premier Horse Racing Event
The Crooked River Roundup has grown into the highest-stakes horse racing event in Oregon, boasting the largest purses, biggest handle, and most enthusiastic crowds of any meet in the state. Smith noted that Saturday's total is expected to push toward $100,000 — nearly double the $58,000 record recently set at Grants Pass Downs.
Infrastructure improvements are also on display this year. New LED lights have been installed on the racetrack proper, improving nighttime visibility for fans in the grandstands.
Admission
Wednesday is Ladies Night — free admission for ladies of all ages. General admission is $10 for ages 4 and up; children 3 and younger get in free every night.
