Wildfire smoke has been blanketing Central Oregon all week, but on Wednesday it didn't stop a Jefferson County tradition: the fair opened its gates to hundreds of families, exhibitors, and community members at the Jefferson County Event Complex in Madras.

Livestock judging got underway as young 4-H and FFA members stepped into the ring with the animals they have raised and cared for since early spring. For many, the opening-day competition is the payoff of months of pre-dawn feedings, grooming sessions, and stubborn training routines — all in preparation for just a few minutes in front of judges.

Rainee Jacobs, one of the steer exhibitors on opening day, summed up the experience with good humor. "I did good, my steer was a little rowdy, but he did good," she said. She added that the fair has plenty to offer beyond the show ring: "Fair's fun. It's really good food, funny animals and you can pet goats."

Gracie Blueback echoed the community spirit of the event. "Just hanging out until the rodeo starts, so I can go cheer on one of my sisters," she said.

Admission to the Jefferson County Fair is free throughout the week, making it one of the most accessible community events in the region. Food vendors, local exhibitors, and open-class displays fill the fairgrounds daily.

A Community Gathering Point During a Hard Week

The timing of the fair — coming in the middle of an active and dangerous fire season — has given the event added meaning for many attendees. With the Brewer Fire burning east of Culver and smoke affecting air quality across Jefferson County, the fairgrounds offered a rare chance for neighbors to gather, decompress, and celebrate the agricultural heritage that defines this part of Oregon.

Health officials advise those with respiratory sensitivities to monitor air quality at oregonsmoke.org and take precautions if smoke levels rise. People with asthma, heart conditions, or other vulnerabilities should limit prolonged outdoor exertion on high smoke days.
