Madras wakes up to fair week this morning. The Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo — one of the longest-running community traditions in Central Oregon — opens its gates today, Wednesday, July 22, at the Jefferson County Event Complex on Fairgrounds Road. The fair runs through Saturday, July 25.
No Carnival This Year
Fairgoers will notice something different when they walk through the gates: the midway will be silent. The fair’s longtime carnival vendor informed county officials in late June that it could not staff the event due to a shortage of workers. Event Complex Manager Bart Platt said the county was unable to find an alternative carnival vendor on short notice.
It’s a disappointment for families who look forward to the rides every year, but Platt and fair organizers have been clear: the carnival was never the point.
“Yes, it may look a little different because we don’t have a carnival, but our fair is not defined by a carnival,” Platt said earlier this month.”
The fair’s roots go back to the 1930s, long before carnival midways became standard summer fair fare. What built the Jefferson County Fair was livestock, rodeo, local agriculture, and community — and all of that remains.
What to Expect
The four-day event features the full slate of traditional fair attractions:
- 4-H and FFA livestock exhibits and judging
- Professional rodeo competition
- Local agricultural and horticultural displays
- Arts, crafts, and home goods exhibits
- Food vendors and fair food
- Live entertainment and community exhibits
The Jefferson County Event Complex spans more than 50 acres on Fairgrounds Road in central Madras, with over 100,000 square feet of covered buildings and barns. It remains one of the most capable fairgrounds facilities in Central Oregon.
A Fair Week Like No Other
This year’s fair opens against the backdrop of the Brewer Fire burning east of Madras. Portions of Jefferson County remain under evacuation orders, and air quality may be impacted by smoke. Attendees are encouraged to monitor air quality conditions at airnow.gov and check for any updates from event organizers before heading out.
For many Jefferson County families, though, the fair represents exactly the kind of community gathering that matters most in difficult times. Come out, support your neighbors, cheer on the rodeo competitors, and celebrate what makes this county home.
